Saving time with Virtual/Electronic Office Hours

Add an HTML block to Moodle course page – insert link to virtual tool, save. Link now appears on the sidebar of the Moodle course page.

Strengths for all

  • Gives commuting students time to meet without coming on campus
  • Permits faculty to schedule office hours from the comfort of their homes
  • The ability to reach a greater number of students

Weaknesses for all

  • Possible Poor bandwidth

Strengths

  • Can add people by phone
  • Schedule a meeting
  • Lots of choices in ability to share, i.e. screen, window, whiteboard, ipad, partial screen
  • Easy to use

Weaknesses

  • Meeting time limited to 40 minutes each with free version
  • Must pay for pro version for longer meeting times

Google Meet

Strengths

  • Can add people by phone
  • Free – for now
  • Can present entire screen or window – may be helpful for google tools online
  • Easy to use

Weaknesses

  • Yet another Google enterprise
  • Cannot be scheduled ahead of time
  • Not as much flexibility in sharing screens – one window or entire screen
  • Does not work on Sarfari, and Firefox use is experimental, according to Google. Chrome is browser to use.
